Soft skills from video interviews

Soft skills — like communication, empathy, and adaptability — are often the key to great hires. But how do you evaluate them without meeting someone in person?
Video interviews offer a surprisingly effective way to observe soft skills in action. When candidates answer questions on camera, they’re showing more than just what they say — they’re showing how they say it.
1. Communication clarity
Do they explain ideas clearly? Can they organize their thoughts? You’ll notice filler words, pacing, and structure — all crucial soft skill indicators.
2. Body language and tone
Even in a short recording, candidates reveal confidence, warmth, or nervousness. Look for posture, eye contact, and vocal tone.
3. Listening and reflection
If your interview includes a multi-question format, you can see how well someone listens or adapts to follow-up prompts.
4. Empathy and emotional intelligence
When asked behavioral questions (“Tell us about a challenge…”), strong candidates will show empathy — not just results.
Video doesn’t replace live interaction, but it gives a powerful first layer. Use it to pre-screen soft skills quickly, then follow up live when needed.
In modern hiring, skills matter — but soft skills move teams forward. Video interviews help you spot them faster.
